Danube Blues

Posted: 27 July 2001

The Milosovic regime claimed that NATO bombing during the Kosovo conflict caused widespread environmental damage. Blitzed factories on the Danube had spilled their chemicals into the river. In the immediate aftermath of the conflict, the UN was charged to assess the scientific evidence for Belgrade's claims.

Earth Report gained remarkable access to the work of an international team of scientists on an UNEP/Habitat mission to Yugoslavia. This film follows their investigations as they take riverbed samples and collect mussels and fish for later laboratory investigation. The preliminary findings were rather surprising as analysis in a Budapest laboratory revealed that there was more contamination before the bombing than afterwards.
